Measure around waist at navel height. Take measurement firmly, so that kilt may sit comfortably without falling down. Do not breath in or hold your breath.
B) Seat Measurement
Measure around the broadest part of the seat/hips. This measurement should be taken with 2 fingers inside the tape to avoid it being too tight.
C) Kilt Length
You will need someone to assist with this measurement. Stand with your feet comfortably apart and have your assistant measure from the top of your hip bone (approximatly level with the navel), to the top of the knee or mid knee as desired. It is personal preference as to where you would like the kilt to sit but as a general rule the kilt should not sit above or below the knee cap.
D) Full Height
This is a useful measurement to help validte the Kilt Length measurement.

DESCRIPTION
A completely handmade kilt. Tailored
using the most customary techniques. Many folk like their kilts to be wholly
traditional from start to finish, especially as a kilt is one of the few pieces
of clothing you will own that should last a lifetime – and is often passed down
the generations. Some consider hand stitching to have much more character than
the modern straight line you get with the machine-finished kilts, which you can
see in the above pictures.
Hand-stitched kilts tend to be set to
the tightest hole, with 2" allowance to become looser.
Made in Scotland by our highly trained kilt makers. Each kilt is fully canvas lined with 3 buckles to ensure an excellent fit, although if you favour just two buckles, let us know.
The kilt is fully hand stitched from 8 yards of worsted wool, available in our full range of tartans from Lochcarron of Scotland, Marton Mills, Strathmore Woollens and House of Edgar.
This painstaking work uses the most traditional techniques to make you a truly uniquely crafted garment.
Kilt pin and sporran may be purchased separately.
Tartan Finder Disclaimer:
As each of the mills has supplied their own images, or they have been taken from fabric samples, please note that the setts are not to scale when comparing tartans of different mills. Also, as screen resolutions vary, colours may differ slightly from those seen here. If unsure, we’d encourage you to purchase a swatch of the fabric before buying.
Measuring advice:
- Waist: measure firmly around waist at navel height.
- Seat: measure around the largest part of the seat area.
- Kilt Length: measure from the top of the hip at navel height (so the measure curves over the top of the hip bone) to the top or middle of the knee. As a rule of thumb, your kilt length should be no shorter than a third of your height. It's always best to get someone to help with this measurement, as you'll lean forward and shorten the length when doing it yourself.
- Height: provide this in feet and inches.
Don't worry if these seems daunting, it's not as hard as it might sound! We have many years experience making kilts for people of all sizes, and will check with you if anything seems unusual.
This item is made to order in our own tailoring workshop in Glasgow, with a standard delivery time of 6 to 7 weeks.
Our tailors can accommodate most requests, please contact us at sales@stkildastore.com or add notes to your order at checkout.
Pleating at the back can either be 'to the sett' meaning it continues the pattern of the tartan, while 'to the stripe' means each pleat carries a uniform stripe from the tartan (see picture comparison above). You have the option to choose which colour stripe you'd like carried over in this option (input which colour from your chosen tartan you'd like in the text box).
If you have any queries regarding the measurement process, the pleating options, or would like some additional information before placing your order, please e-mail us.
Tartan Ranges supported (all pure wool) can be found under the tartan finder button. Prices vary depending on the range.
What’s the difference?
Each mill uses different methods, looms and finishes on their cloth.
In general, heavyweight is perhaps the best material for making kilts, it looks and feels great, while also being fairly crease resistant (when the kilt is treated and kept properly anyway). However, it’s not always best for warm climates, and sometimes folk prefer a lighter option, so mediumweight is a great alternative. Lightweight would be recommended especially for very warm climates.
Strathmore (W60) and House of Edgar (Mediumweight and Old and Rare - but not their Nevis, Hebredian or Emblem ranges) have a traditional selvedge made on a shuttle loom, which means the bottom of the cloth (and so the kilt) is exactly the same thickness as the rest of the cloth. These traditional edges are only available in the mediumweight cloths.
Marton Mills and Lochcarron use a tuck-in selvedge, where the end threads are ‘tucked’ back into the weave. This means the bottom half-inch of the cloth (and the kilt) can be a little thicker than the rest (not too much though, and not enough to distort the shape of the pleating at the back). It also means the tucked threads can poke up out of the cloth.
Don’t worry if this doesn’t mean anything to you! Both are of kilting quality and produce a kilt that will last you a lifetime. The difference is subtle and can be apparent on close inspection, but not so much from a distance.

DESCRIPTION
This stylish, formal evening jacket can be worn to all formal functions where a black tie is requested such as weddings, dances and fancy dinner receptions. The Prince Charlie was developed from older military mess jackets, but has evolved by itself as an iconic piece of Higlandwear. Our Prince Charlie Jackets and Vests are tailored in the UK using the finest quality barathea wool cloth.
- 100% 19oz Barathea Wool
- Fine lining
- Choice of epaulette styles
- Metal 'Clann na Gael' buttons, available in chrome or antique silver
- Available in a variety of colours and materials.
- Chest: measure around the chest at under-arm height, while wearing a shirt or t-shirt, with your arms by your side.
- Waist: measure around the waist at roughly naval height - in line with the top of the hips. *This is higher than where your trousers sit*. Let us know if you're wearing your kilt when you do this, as it can sometimes add to your waist or act as a girdle.
- Sleeve length: find a suit jacket you already own that fits well, and measure from the shoulder seam down to the cuff.
- Back length: measure from the nape of the neck (where the top of your shirt sits) to an inch-and-a-half below where the top of your kilt sits. We use this, the sleeve length and your height to work out a proportional back length for the jacket. Let us know in the instruction box if you have a specific length this must be made to.

DESCRIPTION
The Sheriffmuir Doublet is one of the most formal style of kilt jackets. This is an open jacket with decorative buttons, a standing collar, epaulettes, decorative cuffs and taches. A late Victorian variation on the standard doublet, designed to be more decorative.
In the second half of the twentieth century, this type of jacket was usually worn with a large lace jabot, although nowadays it is usually worn with a less flambouyant necktie or rouche tie. The Sheriffmuir also takes a shoulder plaid for even more formal occasions.
This jacket is supplied with a matching five button waistcoat as standard. These jackets look especially good with a bias-cut tartan waistcoat to match the kilt.
Features:
- Plain or Braided epaulettes
- Polished 'Clann na Gael' or Irish Harp metal buttons, available in chrome or antique silver
- Traditional three-button gauntlet cuff, braemar cuff, or plain cuff
- Chest: measure around the chest at under-arm height, while wearing a shirt or t-shirt, with your arms by your side.
- Waist: measure around the waist at roughly naval height - in line with the top of the hips. *This is higher than where your trousers sit*. Let us know if you're wearing your kilt when you do this, as it can sometimes add to your waist or act as a girdle.

We use this, the sleeve length and your height to work out a proportional back length for the jacket. If you have an exact measurement for the back (ie if you've taken it from a well fitting doublet, from the collar seam to bottom) please let us know in the additional instructions box

Measuring advice:
- Chest: measure around the chest at under-arm height, while wearing a shirt or t-shirt, with your arms by your side.

Kilt hose, also known as kilt socks or Highland hose, are a traditional type of socks that are worn as part of a kilt outfit. These socks are an important component of the traditional Scottish attire and contribute to the overall distinctive and formal appearance of the outfit. They are designed to be knee-length, reaching up to just below the knee. These socks are worn folded down at the top to create a cuff, allowing a portion of the cuff to be visible just below the bottom edge of the kilt. This arrangement showcases the intricate patterns and designs of the kilt hose cuff.
Bottle Green Kilt hose are a good match for pairing with either a darker green tweed jacket, or else a kilt with a deep green base.
The combination of 40% wool, 40% acrylic and 20% nylon make this a comfortable and durable hose suitable to wear in a pipe band or as part of a highland wear outfit. Available in a range of colours to match any tartan.

DESCRIPTION
Antique silver finished pewter kilt pin in the form of a West
Highland Battle Sword. A real statement piece for your kilt.
The Islanders favoured a smaller sword, but one that was more
nimble than the great Claymore. The leading clansmen of Isles favoured a
lighter and more practical weapon, which was ideal for their lifestyle of
seafaring and coastal raiding. Like the Claymore, the West Highland swords were
characterised by their forward sloping arms. Many examples survive, but were often
can be seen on grave slabs throughout the west of Scotland, which show them
with their owners.
Premium quality hand finished pewter kilt pin finished in Antique Silver. This
pin is mounted with a study pin and ball joint.
The kilt pin is worn on the front of a kilt to prevent
it lifting, although this can also be worn as a large statement brooch in its
own right.
Cast and finished at our workshop in Glasgow, Scotland, by our
highly trained craftsmen.
The size of this kilt pin is 10cm long, making it slightly longer
than the average pin.
Be sure to explore the other kilt pins in our Swords of Scotland
Range, which depict other iconic blades associated with Scottish History.

DESCRIPTION
A realistic antique-finished thistle, the 'Flower of Scotland' as celebrated in the unofficial national anthem.
The legend of the thistle becoming a Scottish symbol relates how a hapless barefoot Viking trod on a thistle while sneaking up on a Scottish camp during a night attack. The resulting yelp alerted the Scots and led to the route of the Viking army. The thistle is often pared with the motto of the House of Stewart, Nemo me impune lacessit, 'no one harms me with impunity'.
Designed as a premium antique-silver plated kilt pin, but also makes an excellent brooch.
Cast and finished at our workshop in Glasgow, Scotland, by our highly trained craftsmen.
Size: 8.3cm long.

DESCRIPTION
Plain pewter badges take a couple of days to make, while the plated silver options can take about three weeks.
The Western Isles were once glued together by little ships, the Birlinns. These were a long-lived adaptation of the old Viking longships, with the important addition of a rudder at the back. These were perfectly adapted for life in the west, being fast little vessels that could be rowed or sailed as the need demanded, and then light enough to be pulled ashore. Whether used for trade or war, these were the workhorses of the islanders.
The Birlinn often appears in Scottish heraldry under the name 'Lymphad'.
The Birlinn on this kilt pin is set upon a West Highland
battle sword, which was shorter than the more famous longswords and Claymores
of the mainland and was perfect for use at sea. Both sword and ship here are
inspired by many carved examples that can be found on the rich corpus of graveslabs
that survive in the west.
This is slightly larger than our standard range of Kilt pins: measures 10cm by 3.5cm.
Available in a plain pewter finish, or antique silver.
Premium quality hand finished lead-free pewter kilt pin. Hand cast by our highly skilled craftsmen at our workshop in Glasgow, Scotland.
The kilt pin is worn on the front of a kilt to prevent it lifting.

A larger alternative to our stone-set clan-crested
plaid brooch, this new brooch features Celtic waves set around a simple
saltire.
This is a large ‘boss’ style brooch, with domed top
with a clan crest of your choice mounted on top. This is meant to be a real
statement piece to make your outfit really stand out.
Take your pick from the widest selection of Clan
Crests available, with over 240 Highland, Lowland and Borders names. Our crests
are founded on the third edition of the Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopaedia,
the authoritative text on Scottish crests, which is endorsed by the Lord Lyon
King of Arms.
Plaid brooches attach to the shoulder plaid to act
as weights to keep them in place (they should not be pinned to the jacket as
well, in case the plaid snags on anything). This brooch has a large brass pin
on the back, suitable for any fastening requirement.
Completely designed, mastered, cast and finished in
house at our workshop in Glasgow, Scotland. The only bit we didn’t make is the
brass pin. Cast from high quality 100% lead free pewter.
93mm in diameter - ideal for use with our fly
plaids or on even as a statement piece on a lady’s shawl.
